Real World Learning

School provides many opportunities and contexts for learning. Projects either around school or in the community offer our students valuable learning opportunities. They provide real-world contexts for our students to develop the skills and habits required for a successful future. For example, creativity, problem solving, building partnerships, developing resilience. Some of our recent real-world learning contexts include:

Trade Skills Hut

Year 13 Trade Skills students, working towards Level 3 BCATS credits, are constructing a 4-person hut at school, which will then be dismantled and flown into the bush and reassembled by the students on site along the Upper Makiekie stream. This is a partnership with Te Matai Trust, Ahu Whenua Trust associated with Ngāti Tūwharetoa and Ngāti Kahungunu, with input from Ngāti Pāhuwera and support from Te Whanganui Orutu Taiwhenua Ahuriri.

Young Enterprise Scheme

An experiential programme where our students working in groups are required to set up innovative, sustainable business start-ups. With mentoring from outside professionals, our students work on developing their business idea including finance, sales promotion and strategies, and the production process.

Social Action Projects

Established in 2020, the community garden outside Taradale library is an ongoing social action project. Work continues, including encouraging community involvement, ongoing education around sustainability including gardening and composting which THS students aim to share with local primary schools.

Model United Nations

Model UN provides opportunities for students, both school-based and at externally hosted events, to engage in debates and activities to develop critical thinking, research, and negotiation skills. Students have attended regional and national Model UN events hosted by UN Youth New Zealand, meeting ambassadors, and debating current global issues with students from around New Zealand.
