Below please find more detailed information information on each sport in which Taradale High School is involved.

Adventure Racing

This sport has become a hugely popular and successful sport for Taradale High School.  The school is lucky to have some enthusiastic and experienced staff who have driven this sport over the last few years.  It is a sport that pushes the students both physically and mentally and subsequently requires a large amount of training and dedication from the students.

Recent achievements include:2011 – 1st in New Zealand in the 12hr Adventure Race (Go-4-12).

  • 2014 – 3rd Mixed School NZ Secondary Schools Rogaine Championship.
  • 2014 – 3rd Senior Male Team (Jackson Plumpson, Zayne Jennings) NZ Secondary Schools Rogaine Championship.
  • 2014 – 1st North Island Secondary School Hillary Challenge Qualifying Event.
  • 2014 – 1st Mixed Team NZ Secondary Schools Go-4-12 Championship.
  • 2013 – 1st in Hawke’s Bay Secondary Schools Junior and Intermediate Standard Individual Orienteering Championships.
  • 2013 – Silver in the NZSS Tough Guy & Gal Challenge Boys Division.
  • 2013 – 2nd in North Island Second School Junior Mixed Go-4-12 Championships.
  • 2013 – 1st in North Island Secondary School Senior Mixed Go-4-12 Championships.
  • 2013 – 3rd in North Island Hillary Challenge qualifying competition.
  • 2013 – 2nd in Regional Get to Go race.
  • 2012 – 4th in New Zealand in the Get to Go race.
  • 2012 – 3rd in New Zealand Senior Mixed and Junior 12hr Adventure Race (Go-4-12).
  • 2012 – 8th in Australasia in the Hillary Challenge
  • 2012 – Regional winners of the Get to Go race.
  • 2011 – 1st in North Island Hillary Challenge qualifying competition.

Athletics

Students compete in athletics through their affiliated club. Secondary School competitions include:

  • East Coast Athletics Championships
  • North Island Secondary Schools Athletics Champs
  • NZ Secondary School Track & Field & Road Race Champs
  • East Coast Road Race Champs

Recent achievements include:

  • 2014 – Hawkes Bay Secondary School Sport Awards “Male Athlete of the Year” – Zayne Jennings
  • 2014 – Several students who were East Coast North Island champions

Badminton

Taradale High School has always competed strongly in the HBSS Badminton League and each year puts a number of teams into the competition.

Recent achievements include:

  • 2014 – HB Secondary School Girls Single A Grade Champion – Chenise Hibbard-Nitz.
  • 2014 – HB Secondary School Girls Doubles A Grade 2nd place winners.
  • 2013 – 3rd in Girls A Grade Hawkes Bay SS Competition
  • 2012 – Boys, 2nd place in the HBSS Doubles Competition.
  • 2012 – Boys, Winners of the weekly HBSS Competition.
  • 2012 – Girls, 3rd in the weekly HBSS Competition.
  • 2012 – Juneer Pontana – Winner of the HBSS Singles Championships.
  • 2011 & 2012 – Girls, 2nd place in the HBSS Doubles Competition.

Basketball

Taradale High School has traditionally been proud of the achievements of our basketball teams.  We have teams that cater for all age-groups and have also recently seen many of the girls using it as a means to strengthening their netball skills.

Recent achievements include:

  • 2013 – HB Junior Girls Division 2 Champions.
  • 2013 – HB Junior Boys Division 3 Champions.
  • 2013 – HB Senior Boys Division 1 Runners Up.
  • 2012 – HB Junior Girls Division 2 Champions.
  • 2011 – HB Junior Boys Premier Division Champions.
  • 2011 – HB Senior Boys Division 2 Champions.
  • 2010 – HB Junior Girls Division 2 Champions.

Bowls

Lawn Bowls is played in Term 1 and Term 4 at the Taradale Club.

Recent achievements include:

  • NZSS Regional 3 Lawn Bowls Qualifying – Girls Pairs – Nicole Baird & Kelsey Smith – 2nd Place.
  • NZSS Regional 3 Lawn Bowls Qualifying – Boys Singles – Richard Hocking – 1st Place.

Canoe Polo

Taradale High School has always produced some top athletes within this sport.  We have a long history of success in both regional and national tournaments and could fairly claim the title of being the top canoe polo school within Hawkes Bay.

Recent achievements include:

  • 2015 – Junior Girls GOLD at HBSS championship.
  • 2015 – Senior Girls Bronze medallists HBSS championship.
  • 2015 – Georgia Bryan selected in the New Zealand U18 Womens Canoe Polo team competing in the Oceania championships.
  • 2015 – A number of students selected into Hawkes Bay Mens and Womens representative teams.
  • 2014 – Junior and Senior Girls placed 3rd at the National Championships.
  • 2014 – Senior Girls Regional Champions.
  • 2013 – Junior Girls were National Champions, Senior Girls were National Champions and Senior Boys placed 3rd at the National Championships.
  • 2012 – Junior Girls were both Regional and National Champions.
  • 2011 – Senior Girls were National Champions.
  • 2010 – Senior Boys were National Champions.

Cricket

Taradale High School has a junior cricket team. Junior games are played on a Wednesday afternoon at Napier Boys High School.

Recent achievements include:

  • 2012-2013 season – 1st XI won their grade of the local HBSS league.
  •  2011-12 season – 1st XI won their grade of the local HBSS league.

Cross Country

Students compete in Cross Country at the East Coast North Island SS Cross Country Championships held in Gisborne. Students are selected for this event based on School Cross Country results.

Dance

Taradale High School has their own dance studio and a teacher with dance experience.  This has led to students having the opportunity to represent their school in a number of dance festivals both locally and nationally.  Every student that auditions to compete for the school is placed into a team with people who have strengths in a similar dance style.

Recent achievements include:

  • 2014 – 2nd and 3rd (in the senior section) and 2nd and 3rd place (in the junior section) of the HBSS Gymnastics Association Annual Dance Festival.
  • 2013 – 2nd place in the “DanceNZmade” national competition.
  • 2013 – 1st and 2nd (in the senior section) and 2nd place (in the junior section) of the HBSS Gymnastics Association Annual Dance Festival.
  • 2012 – 1st, 2nd and 3rd place (in the senior section) and 3rd place (in the junior section) of the HBSS Gymnastics Association Annual Dance Festival.
  • 2011 – 1st, 2nd and 3rd  place (in the senior section) and 1st place (in the junior section) of the HBSS Gymnastics Association Annual Dance Festival.
  • 2011 – 3rd place in the NZ Made, North Island competition.

Equestrian

Taradale High School is fortunate to have experienced staff who compete on their own horses in a range of disciplines.  They are willing to provide guidance to the students and arrange for riders to compete in local competitions.  The school currently has a young and enthusiastic team with some students developing specialist areas, such as dressage and cross-country.  There is the opportunity to represent the school in two major regional secondary school events.

Recent achievements include:

  • 2013 – Hawke’s Bay winners of Woodford House equestrian event.
  • 2012 – 3rd in the Woodford House Secondary School Showjumping Competition.

Football

Football has always been a popular sporting code at Taradale High School and consequently a sport that the school has continued to have a great deal of success in.  We have teams suitable for all age-groups and both genders.  Traditionally we have had a high number of teaching staff who also continue to play the sport themselves.

Recent achievements include:

  • 2013 – 1st XI Boys 3rd in HBSS Division 1 competition.
  • 2013 – A large number of students selected for representative teams.
  • 2012 – 1st XI were 2nd in the HBSS 1st XI Grade.
  • 2012 – 1st XI came 4th in the Linward Cup during national tournament week.
  • 2012 – 2nd XI were 1st in the HBSS 2nd XI Grade.
  • 2012 – A large number of students have been selected for HB representative sides.
  • 2011 – Junior A Boys won the Knock-Out Cup in Hawke’s Bay

Futsal

Taradale High School has a strong Futsal following.  They currently have teams entered in both the boys and girls HBSS grades (4 teams) and have also been away to national tournaments.  This is proving to be a popular new sport that caters for all ages.

Recent achievements include

  • 2014 – Junior Futsal team 5th at National SS championships.
  • 2013 – Hawkes Bay SS Championship winners.
  • 2012 – Senior Girls were the HBSS league winners.
  • 2012 – Junior Boys were runners-up in the HBSS league.

Golf

Golf coaching is made available to students by an experienced staff member.  Students are also given the opportunity to represent their school should they wish to.

Recent achievements include:

  • 2011 -2012 Madison Noakes was the HBSS Golf Champion.  He has also been selected for the HB Men’s representative team.

Hockey

Taradale High School has always been known for its strength in Hockey.  They have been lucky to have the expertise of some top level coaches over the years and consequently their teams continue to achieve.

Recent achievements include:

  • 2014 – 1st XI Boys WINNERS of the HBSS Division 1 competition.
  • 2014 – Players selected for the HB U15 and U18 representative squads.
  • 2013 – 1st XI Girls 3rd in HBSS Division 1 competition.
  • 2013 – 1st XI Boys runners up in the HBSS Division 1 competition.
  • 2013 – Two students selected for the HBSS High Performance Academy.
  • 2013 – Many Players selected for the HB U15 and U18 representative squads.
  • 2012 – 1st XI Boys were runners up in the Founders Cup (national tournament held in Levin).
  • 2012 – Players selected for the HB U15 and U18 representative squads.
  • 2012 – Players selected for the Central Districts U21 squad.

Mountain Biking

This is a recent initiative that involves the opportunity to train fortnightly at Eskdale Mountain Bike Park.  There is guidance and coaching by experienced staff members for those who are interested.  The current aim is to get a team of students prepared to compete in competitions in 2015.

Netball

Taradale High School has consistently had teams in all levels of the local secondary school competiton.  We cater for students of all abilities and are pleased with the level of success that we have shown over the past few years.  Our students are also provided with the chance to attend umpiring and coaching courses in order to further their involvement in this sport.

Recent achievements include:

  • 2014 – HBSS Super 12 Netball – Plate Winners.
  • 2014 – HBSS Winners A grade Saturday competition.
  • 2014 – U17 representative player, Chanay Peri.
  • 2013 – HBSS Super 12 Netball – Plate Winners.
  • 2012 – HBSS Collegiate Netball – Bowl Winners.
  • 2012 – 17th (from approximately 60 schools) that competed in the LNISS.
  • 2012 – Runner up in the Napier Netball 11B Grade, 11C Grade and 10A Grade.
  • 2012 – 10 students selected for various HB age-group squads, including Irihapeti Tuhura who was selected for the Eastern Netball U19 team.

Pistol Shooting

This sport has rapidly increased in numbers over the last few years – to the point that we are now having to restrict the number of people who are able to compete.   The school has purchased their own pistols and offers this sport as part of our Year 11 Physical Education curriculum.  This has proved to be extremely successful.

Rugby

This sport has grown in numbers and strength during the last two years.  We have both male and female teams that are of a quality that we can be proud of.

Recent achievements include:

  • 2012 – 1st XV were runners-up in the Central 6 Rugby Tournament.
  • 2012 –  1st XV Beat Te Aute 1st XV (at Te Aute) for the first time in 30 years.
  • 2011 & 2012  – Sean Morrison was selected for the HB U16 side and the Hurricanes U16 tournament squad.
  • 2011 – 1st XV were winners of the HBSS B Grade.

Sailing

This sport has seen a great increase in interest from our students since it was established a couple of years ago.  We now offer a programme that caters for absolute beginners through to those who have represented New Zealand.

  •  It has proved particularly popular with our international students.
  • We currently also offer a sailing camp in Year 10.

Snooker

This sport has proven popular with a group of students over the last 3 years and it has been fantastic to see the numbers increase.  In 2012 the school had a dozen new junior students sign up to play this sport, so we are hopeful that we will see even greater success in this sport in the upcoming years.

Recent achievements include:

  • 2013 – Mikey Stewart is the NZ Under 21 Snooker Champion and competed in the Under 21 World Snooker Championships in China.
  • 2010 – Winners of the HBSS Team Shield.

Softball

Softball is a relatively new sport at Taradale High School.  For the past two years we have had a girls team competing in the local competition.  Games are played on a Monday during the 1st and 4th school term.

Recent achievements include:

  • 2012 – Sam Cooper was selected for the HB U17 Representative team and also for the NZ Junior White Sox squad.

Squash

Squash has held consistent numbers over the last few years, with many students starting as beginners when they arrive at secondary school.  We offer both male and female teams in this sport.

Recent achievements include:

  • 2014 – HBSS Winners of Senior Boys competition.
  • 2013 – HBSS Winners of Junior Girls, Junior Boys and Senior Girls competition.
  • 2012 – Girls Champions.
  • 2012 – Rosemary Mair and Alyssa Martin were part of the HB club team which won the National E grade squash competition.

Surf Livesaving

Taradale High School is fortunate enough to have staff who are heavily involved in the local surf lifesaving scene.  They are able to provide students with information on how to get involved in club competitions and also organise the students to compete in the local secondary school events.

Recent achievements include:

  • 2012 – SLS NZ U15 Spring Relay team winners – Rebecca Shepherd, Caitlin Morrison & Abi Collins.
  • 2011 – 2012 – Best Co-educational School in Hawke’s Bay (Pool Champs).

Swimming

Each year students are selected to attend the HBSS Swimming Championships to represent Taradale High School.  In the past we have had some outstanding swimmers who have won their age-group races.  For these top swimmers, there is also the opportunity to compete in the NISS Championships in Palmerston North and then go onto the NZSS Championships in Hamilton.

Recent achievements include:

  • 2012 – Alex Manktelow – made 6 National finals for his age-group.
  • 2012 – 9 Top 3 placings at the HBSS Swimming Champs.

The school also holds their own Swimming Sports which allows these top swimmers a chance to shine in front of their peers, while also providing a fun and competitive day for all other students.  It is a compulsory event on our school calendar and the team spirit plus student/staff interaction ensure it is a day that is fondly remembered by most.

Table Tennis

This sport has continued to be popular with our students with the numbers increasing over the last 3 years.

Recent achievements include:

  • 2011 – HB Secondary Schools U15 Doubles Champions.
  • 2011 – HB Secondary Schools U15 Singles Champion.

Tennis

Each year it is reviewed as to whether or not school teams will be entered into the HBSS league.  In the years where the decision is made against entering, then students are guided toward playing for the local tennis club.  There is however the opportunity to represent the school in sporting exchanges.

Touch Rugby

Touch Rugby is always a popular summer sport amongst the students at Taradale High School.  We have teams that cater for all ages and both genders, with approximately 60 students currently representing the school in the local Hawke’s Bay competiton.

Recent achievements include:

  • 2012 – 3rd in the Junior Boys, Senior Boys and Senior Mixed Competiton.
  • 2011 – Winners of the Senior Mixed Competition.

Triathlon / Multi-Sport

In recent years this sport has begun to really develop.  We are seeing an increase in students interested in being involved and consequently our success rate has risen also.  Many of our students involved in this sport also compete in ‘adventure racing’.

Recent achievements include:

  • 2012 – Winners of the Junior HBSS  Teams Triathlon
  • 2012 – Zane Jennings – 2nd in NZ U14 Multisport Race
  • 2012 – Kelly Sunnex – 4th in NZ U16 Multisport Race
  • 2012 – Joshua Jones/Klayten Betts were 1st and 2nd in the Off Road Open Duathlon
  • 2008 – 2011 – Winners of the Senior HBSS Teams Triathlon

Volleyball

Volleyball has always been a popular sport at Taradale High School and we have been lucky to be able to provide our students with a very high level of coaching.  In recent years this trend has continued with 2012 seeing an increase in the numbers of both boys and girls.

Recent achievements include:

  • 2013 – HBSS Boys Division 1 Champions.
  • 2012 – Junior Boys 2nd in the HB league.
  • 2012 – Junior Boys 2nd in the HB/Poverty Bay tournament.
  • 2012 – Senior Boys 3rd in the HB league and winners of the Nationals (Division 4).
  • 2012 – Senior Girls 4th in the HB league.
  • 2012 – 2 players selected for the HB U17 squad.
  • 2012 – 2 players selected for the HB U19 squad

Water Polo

This is a relatively new sport for Taradale High School.  We are fortunate enough to have a passionate staff member who has launched this sport at the school.  For the last two years we have had a girls water polo team that has travelled and competed at the North Island Secondary School Championships.
