Careers education and guidance helps students to understand the relevance of school to their future plans and improves their motivation to remain at school and achieve qualifications.
Career management competencies for students include:
- developing self-awareness,
- identifying possibilities and opportunities,
- understanding consequences of choices and decisions,
- making decisions and taking action.
At Taradale High School there is a careers programme for each year level with the aim of students being well-prepared for further education, training and work by the time they leave school in either Year 12 or 13.
In Year 9, the focus is on a smooth and successful transition to high school. In Term 4, the digital tools Tahatu and My Mahi will be introduced to all Year 9 students via an interactive workshop. Students will be encouraged to spend time on both Tahatu and My Mahi regularly to do their own careers research.
In Year 10, students continue with their own development of self-awareness and also their understanding of the NZ Qualifications Framework and what training and qualifications are required for a variety of different jobs.
Students and their families are well-informed about the relationship between their subject choices and their future options both at school and when they leave school via online subject selection booklets and a Subject Selection evening held in early September.
In Years 12 or 13, students can try courses outside the school curriculum by taking a Trades Academy course at EIT or through Primary ITO as part of their school programme, or they can choose a GATEWAY course which gives the student an opportunity for work experience in their chosen field. See below for more information on two of these options.
