School Counsellor
Our school counsellors provide professional counselling, assessment and wellbeing support to students, grounded in an understanding of adolescent development and mental health. The role involves conducting needs and risk assessments, offering short-term solution-focused interventions, and helping ākonga to develop insight, resilience and responsibility for their own wellbeing. The counsellor also supports and advises staff in promoting a safe, inclusive and emotionally supportive school environment, consistent with the school’s values (Manaakitanga, Takakawe, Waihanga and Huritao), the Education and Training Act 2020, and the NZAC Code of Ethics.
Permanent position, up to 40 hours per week, term time only. Remuneration commensurate with experience.Must be currently registered with the New Zealand Association of Counsellors (NZAC) or equivalent professional body and ensure ongoing compliance with its Code of Ethics.
Key Responsibilities
Provide professional counselling services that are accessible to all students. This may include short-term therapy, problem-solving, mediation, skills development, individual or group counselling, and crisis intervention, as appropriate.
Support students to understand and take responsibility for their mental, emotional, social, and physical wellbeing and development.
Conduct needs and risk assessments, providing timely, solution-focused interventions and referring to external agencies when further specialist support is required.
Maintain strict client confidentiality, in line with the Privacy Act 2020 and the Health Information Privacy Code, except where disclosure is necessary to prevent or lessen a serious threat to the safety or health of an individual or the public. Any such concerns will be reported immediately to the Principal.
Keep accurate and secure records of counselling sessions and related case notes, ensuring all written client records are stored confidentially and in accordance with school policy.
Act as a consultant and resource person within the school, supporting staff with strategies to promote student wellbeing and a safe, inclusive environment.
Liaise with and refer students to external agencies (e.g., GP, CAFs, social services, or community support providers) where professional assessment indicates a need for external support or intervention.
Maintain active professional membership and registration with the New Zealand Association of Counsellors (NZAC) or an equivalent professional body and ensure ongoing compliance with its Code of Ethics.
Engage in regular professional supervision with a qualified supervisor, with frequency determined by mutual agreement and in line with NZAC expectations.
Participate in professional networks and continuing professional development to maintain current best practice in adolescent counselling and school-based wellbeing.
Prepare mid-year and end-of-year reports for the Principal and the School Board, summarising key trends, themes, and developments in student wellbeing (without breaching confidentiality).
Report directly to the Deputy Principal (Pastoral) and meet weekly with the Principal to discuss matters relating to legality, safety, and significant emerging issues.
Recognise and value the role of parents, caregivers, and whānau, seeking and encouraging their involvement in student wellbeing where appropriate, except where privacy or safety considerations preclude this.
Inform the Principal promptly if a student’s safety is at risk or where legal issues arise, ensuring student welfare remains paramount.

Gateway Coordinator
For the start of term 1, 2026, Taradale High School is seeking a motivated, well-organised and student-focused Gateway Co-ordinator to join our Careers and Transition Services team. This role offers a great opportunity to support senior students as they develop workplace skills, gain industry experience, and plan their career pathways.
About the role
The Gateway Co-ordinator works closely with the HOD Careers and Transition Services, the pastoral team, local employers, whānau and training providers to co-ordinate all aspects of the school’s Gateway programme.
Key responsibilities include:
Sourcing and managing suitable workplace placements for students
Liaising with employers, industry training organisations and external providers
Organising Health & Safety and First Aid training prior to placements
Monitoring students’ progress, wellbeing and achievement while on placement
Managing TEC reporting, DXP Nga Kete and KAMAR data entry
Supporting broader careers initiatives such as Discovery Day, tertiary visits, and the Learn to Drive programme
This is a hands-on, community-connected role that suits someone who enjoys working with young people and helping them take their next steps beyond school.

Position details

Hourly rate: $30.78 - $33.15 (in line with the Support Staff in Schools' Collective Agreement, dependent on experience).
